Completions - Casing Integrity

The study of evaluating the impact of reservoir compaction and conducting casing stress analysis assists in devising strategies to exploit opportunities to increase production and oil recovery from the reservoir. The analysis of well integrity is carried out after defining casing stresses, strains and displacements, as well as rock deformations that resulted from reservoir exploitation.

ADVANTEK International developed a geomechanics model Comp@™ for the purpose of conducting casing integrity analysis. The developed numerical model is used for calculating displacement fields in the overburden, which result from a compaction element or a strain nucleus in the reservoir. In addition, the model is used to evaluate deformations and stresses on the casing of a well with a specified trajectory determined by the surrounding rock deformation. The calculated deformation includes rock movements within the overburden, displacement along well trajectories and ground subsidence at the mudline. These deformations, including the subsidence, are a result of reservoir compaction due to pressure depletion. Casing collapse, burst, ovality and doglegs are also evaluated.

Reservoir simulation results (such as from VIP, Eclipse) are directly used in the developed model. The pressure profiles, initial and final reservoir pressures which are calculated inside the reservoir simulators are used as input to the model. Additional reservoir rock properties such as pore volume compressibility, net to gross, porosity, corner point coordinates of each block, wellbore trajectory and overburden are included as input.

Several reservoirs have been evaluated using the developed model for reservoir subsidence estimation and well integrity analysis. Case studies include the evaluations of single, multi and deep-water reservoirs. Finite element meshes with relevant boundary displacements and stresses are generated for further detailed analysis. Visualization of stresses, strains and displacements are generated by both conventional plots and tables or by the use of interactive, virtual reality techniques. Analysis results are then used to develop an exploitation strategy for increasing production and oil recovery from the reservoir.
